I read about this strategy online, and tried it on my forum. And it's working great so far. I've had two different visitors make guest replies to existing threads. Make it easy for your visitors to participate without having to go through the registration and email verification first (which is a form of barrier to their immediate participation). Once they get some replies to their comments, they will be more inclined to continue participating as a guest or register. As a guest, they see "guest" as a username, so they'd probably want to register to personalise the username. My forum doesn't get many visitors, so no spam so far.

Try it! If you end up getting spammed by guests, turn off the option for guests to make posts. But you need to be vigilant and keep an eye on the new posts, because sometimes guests make a post that you're not even aware them...then the guests will feel ignored and probably won't come back.
