Non-stop torrential rains since Monday night pounded several parts of Chennai and its suburbs and Puducherry triggering a deluge completely disrupting normal life as army and navy were deployed tonight in two suburban areas to undertake rescue on a war footing. The rains that have virtually broken a 100-year-old record with one day’s rainfall covering a month’s average also flooded areas in Vadapalani, Valasaravakkam and Nandamvakkam as nearby lakes overflowed into the city. As Tamil Nadu continues to experience heavy rains, life in capital Chennai has come to a standstill with flooded streets and severely-affected transport services. Chennai rains have claimed 40 lives so far. In many parts of South Chennai, the water was almost five feet in depth, especially those which have been constructed on marshes and swamps.

The main cause, however, for the flooding has been the blatant disregard for ecology by the caucus of politicians, civil servants and developers. Swamps and wet lands such as Pallikarani have been reclaimed to accommodate high rise buildings.

More alarm bells are ringing. The Chennai floods could be the consequence of climate change, opines one expert. If it is so there is a need to make, not just Chennai, but all our cities more resilient to climate change. We all should pray to god that chennai should over come from this disaster and they will get relief from this disaster so that there life can come on track.
